Richard T. "Dick" Sonberg is the manager and broker-in-charge of Island Business Brokerage and Realty, LLC. He has many years of experience in the business world which enables him to evaluate and present the essential information about businesses that are offered for sale.
A native of White Plains, NY, Dick Sonberg is a graduate of St. Lawrence University and also earned an engineering degree from Columbia University in 1955. He was then employed by Ingersoll-Rand Company as a sales engineer until 1959, at which time he entered law school at the University of Colorado.
Dick received his law degree with honors in 1962. He was admitted to the bar in Colorado, Connecticut and Oklahoma. He practiced corporation law, securities law and oil and gas law in Tulsa, Oklahoma for over 30 years, and was an adjunct professor of corporation and securities law at the University of Tulsa for several years. In addition, in 1969, he organized the first of three independent oil and gas exploration companies, all of which he managed while still active as an attorney in Tulsa, and still manages at this time.
In the 1970's Dick also became an active part-owner of the St. Louis Cardinals Triple-A baseball team in Tulsa, and in 1983 he helped organize and manage the minor league baseball team in Savannah that is now the Savannah Sand Gnats.
In August, 1980, Dick and his family moved to a new home on Calibogue Cay in Sea Pines Plantation, where they still reside. Beginning in 1991 the Sonberg family owned and operated two large water sports companies on the Island. He, also, was a principal organizer of South Island Dredging Association which coordinates marina dredging projects in Sea Pines.
Dick Sonberg believes he has the background, experience, and abilities to provide the processional advice and services necessary when clients are seeking to either buy or sell a going business. As a 30 year resident on Hilton Head Island, he has seen the growth in business activity , and has seen what succeeds and what doesn't. Steve Colburn
Over the past 15 years Steve has helped facilitate the sale of over 200 businesses from a full spectrum of industries including distributors, manufacturers, services, retail, and restaurants. Steve brings to our business brokerage customers a wealth of management experience and advisory expertise. He has a unique knowledge of the day-to-day operations of small businesses, positioning him to offer valuable insight into the challenges business owners might face and how to manage them successfully. He has also been actively involved in conducting retained acquisition searches on behalf of private equity groups (PEGS), individual investors and existing businesses looking for strategic acquisitions. Prior to becoming involved in the business brokerage industry he founded and managed a company that specialized in providing consulting and financing to small businesses. His initial business experience was as a commercial loan officer and regional sales manager for commercial banks where he was consistently awarded for his top production. Steve has been asked to speak, too, and has trained dozens of business brokers in the areas of deal structuring, financing, documenting seller addbacks, managing the business brokerage process and eliminating surprises while closing deals quickly.

Gus Sonberg is the assistant manager of Island Business Brokerage and realty, LLC. He has 13+ years of small business experience in the water sports/marina industry and five years of corporate experience in supply chain management, providing him a unique perspective to help guide clients in either the selling or purchasing of businesses.
A native of Tulsa, Oklahoma and a 30 year resident of Hilton Head Island, Gus Sonberg is a graduate of St. Lawrence University in 1990. Starting in 1991, he managed the Sonberg-family water sports business until late 2003, when he departed for graduate school.
In 2005, Gus received a masters of science in global supply chain management from Maine Maritime Academy's Loeb-Sullivan School for International Business and Logistics. Afterward, he joined Lucent Technologies as a Logistics Manager working global transportation and warehousing cost saving efforts through September of 2007. In October, 2007 through October 2008, he was employed with Cummins Turbo Technologies in Charleston, SC as a Sourcing Manager for new product introduction.
It was a serendipitous meeting in 2008 between this father and son that a vision was seeded to start a new business brokerage to serve individuals and businesses in the Low Country pursuing going business concerns or divesting themselves from established businesses to pursue new challenges.
